From the Shadows - The Enemies of GTA IV and Why We Shouldn't Listen to Them

Groups and activists in America never cease to amaze me. There are people who will do anything to get their slice of attention no matter what banter they must spew. Their latest opportunity was a game that many of us have anticipated for months and have bought – myself included. We've known this for quite some time, but let us be reminded that the Grand Theft Auto series gives loudmouths with shallow opinions to speak out.

As I write this, I have a general idea of what readers expect me to bring up. There have been several enemies of video games throughout the years, but one enemy continues to fight on even when the court system itself demands that he stand down. Jack Thompson is quite the stubborn, little roach.

For well over a decade, Jack has used his law degree to bully the gaming industry into pulling extreme measures to sell its products. Moreover, he is possibly the biggest reason why the ESRB was created. He's not shy about his beliefs, and he loves to attack the GTA series with relentless wrath. He didn't attack GTA IV as much as previous titles because he was legally barred from filing any form of suit to block the sales of Take-Two Interactive products. Still, this didn't stop Thompson from writing an extremely disrespectful letter to the mother of Strauss Zelnick, director of Take-Two Interactive.

"The pornography and violence that your son trafficks in is the kind of stuff that most mothers would be ashamed to see their son putting into the hands of other mothers' children … Happy Mothers' Day, Mrs Zelnick, which this year is May 11, two weeks after your son unleashes porn and violence upon other mothers' boys. I'm sure you're very proud," Thompson had written to an unexpecting, innocent mother. Thompson would later state that this letter was actually meant to be sent to Zelnick's lawyer. Jack honestly expects someone to believe such a lie.

Another group who tries to convince us that video games control our lives is MADD – aka Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The members of this group feel that the “drunk driving” feature in GTA IV will lead our youth to believe that drunken driving is okay and actually fun. There’s no actual proof, course. It’s merely their poorly drawn opinion.

As the outrage continues, we continue to wait for that traffic incident that can be linked to any GTA IV influence. To the surprise of no one in the gaming community, this report hasn’t arrived. It’s already five years late anyway.
